Definitely funk. George Clinton, Rick James, James Brown, Morris Day and the Time, the Ohio Players. If you have to listen to that less refined stuff, go with Full Collapse by Thursday.

I'm usually trying to fall asleep so I need something calmer. Coldplay is a recent favorite on the plane.

I agree, browndog. I want nothing more but to fall asleep on planes!!! I usually listen to music w/ mellow instrumentals and voices, such as Fiona Apple, Radiohead, John Mayer, or my new favorite Mikal Blue (another male guitarist/singer solo artist).

here's probably a band that nobody really knows

but try listening to Rusty Truck. Its not along many of the emo bands you listed, but they're really smooth sounding. Its really mellow so its perfect for the plane, lets you relax and enjoy them. Its led by Mark Seliger, a photographer for Rolling Stone Magazine, so you know he knows what he's doing
