The VHS/Laserdisc of Delicate Sound of Thunder - 02-21-2007, 02:51 PM

I think this concert is crap!
I am talking about the video footage.
All those pics from fans in slow motion.
All those 'smooth' cam shots.
This video is awful!
And I like the CD's from the concert, so it's not the music.

What's your opinion on this?

Do you think Dave still has the original tapes and he will release a new
director's edit of the footage? Just a normal concert footage without
all the extra slow mo crap etc?

I have the Laserdisc. Personally, I think the quality of the music
recording far surpasses DSOTM.
As for the video footage, its different, and not in an unpleasant way, IMO.

I prefer the DSoT footage to Pulse. The band is the focal point of
DSoT and it's more creative than the rather ordinary angles and edits
of the later work.

OK, I screwed up. What I meant to say was I prefer the soundtrack from DSoT
(Laserdisc) to the soundtrack of
Pulse (Laserdisc) which contains all the tracks from DSOTM. When it comes
to the re-release of
Pulse on DVD, all bets are off.
But the digital soundtrack of DSoT, is one of the best live PF recordings
available. IMHO.

mean by a "liberal" then I am proud to be a liberal. ": John F. Kennedy

Just a shame it didn't quite come off as seamlessly when DSoT's
director tried to do it live and off the cuff in Venice....

It's not like we're spoilt for choice though, is it?

Re: The VHS/Laserdisc of Delicate Sound of Thunder - 02-24-2007, 01:45 PM

As I recall it was shot on 35mm film with multiple cameras, which is a
fairly whacky decision and also an extremely expensive enterprise.

The fact that it was 35mm should, as the premium medium, have given us
for prosterity, State-Of-The-Art pictures from 1987 (?)

I think the director and editor between them have decided to opt for
the slow motion/multiple dissolve style of editing, which as far as I
remember the film, pretty much ruined it. Shame.

Nevertheless, we now have the re-edited Pulse DVD. I am glad I do not
suffer from photosensitive epilepsy and am surprised that the Pulse
pictures ever pass for TV transmission (heh heh).

So yeah, the Delicate Sound Of Thunder film was a wasted opportunity.
