Hi Kyla, lunch was awesome today. Finally found a good restaurant
with good fish and chips. Fish and chips are great in England. The
only food that I actually like there besides their candy. No shortage
of candy in England.
We in the US should call them Fish and Fries. We are calling fries
chips here and don't even realize it. Atleast I didnt' until now. duh.

The very first time I ever heard about fish and chips was while reading
one of my sister's outdated teen magazines that she had in storage. I
might have been around 8 years old. Apparently, George Harrison's
favorite meal was fish and chips. I thought he made up the combination,
himself. I decided to write a letter to him, probably in care of the
magazine. I remember that it went something like this... "Dear George,
Do you really like to eat fish with your potato chips? They don't sound
like they would go together because potato chips are a dessert."

As a side note, around that time I also remember reading an article in
one of those outdated teen magazines about George's sister, Lou, and
writing to her, as well. Little did I know that we would someday become
good friends.

And potato chips in England are called Crisps.
And our cookies are their biscuits
and our biscuits are their scones?

I went to a restaurant there where the waitress asked if I wanted
pickles. She brought back relish.

Take it from me and don't ever say yes to black pudding, expecting
dessert.

Heh. Thomas Pynchon has a great passage about British candy in Gravity's
Rainbow, which seems pretty on the mark to me. Apparently he doesn't share
your enthusiasm for their art.

I've always been baffled, actually, as to why they call fries chips. I
usually like Britishisms, and even adopt them, but this one just makes
no sense to me.

Crisps makes sense. They're crisp. But what are chips a chip of? An
American chip looks like a chip, a British chip looks like a french fry.
Why would anyone apply the word 'chip' to a french fry? I just don't get it.

By the way, this was a misattribution, Sean. I didn't say this. It was
written by "luvhockey". Anyway, I wonder who named these foods first...
the British or the Americans.
